Tropheops sp."weed" lives in the shallow waters of sheltered bays, on places where are small rocks near the vegetation. They are found along the northwestern coast of the Lake between Usisya and Ngara and along the eastern coast between the Ruhuhu River (halfway Manda and Ndumbi) and Mbweca in Mozambique. This variant is found in the neighbourhood of Chilumba. In the lake the males of these species can grow to 10 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow a little taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 12 cm, females grow to about 9 cm. Tropheops sp."weed" can sometimes be pretty intolerant towards equal species, other inhabitants they leave generally alone. You can best keep this species with multiple females and other mbunas in an aquarium with a lot of hiding places. In the lake they mainly feed on algae which they tear of the substrat on the bottom and the rocks. They also graze off plant leaves looking for algae. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. Food rich of algae like spirulina pellets or flakes is very important to them so this should not be missing on their menu.
